Spin-Statistics Violations in Superstring Theory

چکیده

I describe how superstring theory may violate spin-statistics in an experimentally observable manner. Reviewing the basics of superstring interactions and how to utilize these to produce a statistical phase, I then apply these ideas to two specific examples. The first is the case of heterotic worldsheet linkings, whereby one small closed string momentarily enlarges sufficiently to pass over another, producing such a statistical phase. The second is the braneworld model with noncommutative geometry, whereby matter composed of open strings may couple to a background in which spacetime coordinates do not commute, modifying the field (anti)commutator algebra. I conclude with ways to sharpen and experimentally test these exciting avenues to possibly verify superstring theory. 1 ar X iv :0 80 9. 27 33 v1 [ he pth ] 1 6 Se p 20 08

Quons in Relativistic Theories Must Be Bosons or Fermions

The quon algebra describes particles, “quons,” that are neither fermions nor bosons using a label q that parametrizes a smooth interpolation between bosons (q = +1) and fermions (q = −1). We derive “conservation of statistics” relations for quons in relativistic theories, and show that in relativistic theories quons must be either bosons or fermions. There are three reasons to study theories th...

Large-N bounds on, and compositeness limit of, gauge and gravitational interactions

In a toy model of gauge and gravitational interactions in D ≥ 4 dimensions, endowed with an invariant UV cut-off Λ, and containing a large number N of non-self-interacting matter species, the physical gauge and gravitational couplings at the cut-off, αg ≡ gΛ and αG ≡ GNΛ, are shown to be bounded by appropriate powers of 1 N . This implies that the infinite-bare-coupling (so-called compositeness...

Tree scattering amplitudes of the spin-4/3 fractional superstring. II. The twisted sectors.

The spin-4/3 fractional superstring is characterized by a world-sheet chiral algebra involving spin-4/3 currents. The discussion of the tree-level scattering amplitudes of this theory presented in Ref. [1] is expanded to include amplitudes containing two twisted-sector states. These amplitudes are shown to satisfy spurious state decoupling. The restriction to only two external twisted-sector st...

Tree scattering amplitudes of the spin-4/3 fractional superstring. I. The untwisted sectors.

Scattering amplitudes of the spin-4/3 fractional superstring are shown to satisfy spurious state decoupling and cyclic symmetry (duality) at tree-level in the string perturbation expansion. This fractional superstring is characterized by the spin-4/3 fractional superconformal algebra—a parafermionic algebra studied by Zamolodchikov and Fateev involving chiral spin-4/3 currents on the world-shee...

On toric geometry, Spin(7) manifolds, and type II superstring compactifications

We consider type II superstring compactifications on the singular Spin(7) manifold constructed as a cone on SU(3)/U(1). Based on a toric realization of the projective space CP, we discuss how the manifold can be viewed as three intersecting Calabi-Yau conifolds. The geometric transition of the manifold is then addressed in this setting. The construction is readily extended to higher dimensions ...
